Let's start at the beginning
My name is Brianna Bowman King.
I am a writer, photographer, and budding fisheries scientist based in Alaska. I live in Anchorage with my husband, Gus. Gus and I get around a bit, usually between his home country of New Zealand and our current home in Anchorage. He enjoys hunting, I enjoy fishing, and together we enjoy the outdoor opportunities that Alaska has to offer. I've always been interested in the natural world and wildlife, and equally I've always been intrigued by people's relationship with the natural world.
Writing has been a passion of mine since I was young. Photography is an interest that has developed in the last few years. I hope that I can shed some light on subjects that interest me, and hope to bring you along with me.
What follows is a quick list of my interests that will likely crop up as blog subjects:
Most posts will focus on issues relevant to Alaska, and the occasional post will also either focus on New Zealand or draw comparisons to New Zealand.
Commercial fisheries science and management issues
In particular, 'conservation engineering', or modifying commercial fishing gear and/or practices to develop more sustainable methods of harvest that reduce bycatch and impacts on habitat
Wildlife biology and management issues
My attempts as an amateur birder to identify, photograph, and record vocalizations of birds in Alaska
Reflections on the intersection of humans, nature, wildlife, and natural resource extraction and management
Reflections on recreational and subsistence hunting and fishing
My own experiences as an amateur hunter, fisher, and forager
Some adventure-sporty things: hiking, packrafting, cross-country skiing, trail running
Suggestions of favorite writers and photographers, with emphasis on Alaskan writer and photographers
The occasional historical narrative
This is quite a smattering of topics, which I hope encapsulates my wide range of interests. Some subjects are controversial or sensitive, and I endeavor to do my best to educate myself, present facts (with citations), and clarify what I understand to objective and subjective truth.
Thank you for taking an interest, and I hope to that I represent our life here in Alaska in a way that demonstrates everything that made us fall in love with this wild and nuanced place.
